Typefaces
Baskerville, Helvetica, & Avenir
For this poster series, there are three periods of type that I chose from, each with one of their respective type. Period 1 (1450–1890): movable type, period 2 (1920–1960): the modernist era, and period 3 (1980–1999): the information era. For the first period, I chose Baskerville, for the second period I chose Helvetica, and for the third period I chose Avenir.
Each of these typefaces all have unique characteristics that I want to bring out and show through these posters, uniting them as a set as well as making them distinct enough to represent their time eras. Baskerville’s poster fits with the old-style of type that was used for printed materials, emphasizing the elegant structure of each character as well as the bold and thin contrasts within each character. The Helvetica type poster exemplifies a new san-serif type that is simple, bold, and neutral in style, making it very applicable and geometric. Finally, the Avenir type poster showcases its more organic nature and simplified san-serif style from previous san-serif typefaces. The color of the posters are the same, yet are used to successfully represent their own time eras in a unique and effective way, still making each poster its own, and yet make them all feel united as a set.
